How to distinguish baby teeth and permanent teeth?

How to distinguish baby teeth and permanent teeth?
Baby teeth and permanent teeth are two completely different types of teeth but have a very close relationship. These 2 teeth are difficult to distinguish because most baby teeth will be replaced by permanent teeth, but there are some groups of teeth when erupting without changing teeth. So what are baby teeth and what are permanent teeth and how to distinguish baby teeth and permanent teeth? The article will help readers better understand these two types of teeth.

1. What are baby teeth?

Baby teeth are the first teeth to erupt, formed during the development period of young children from 4-24 months old, who are breastfeeding.

2.What are permanent teeth?

Permanent teeth are the teeth that erupt after the baby teeth fall out, or in other words, the permanent teeth will grow in to replace the original baby teeth and last until old age. If the tooth is permanently broken, it will not be able to grow back. Permanent teeth may erupt several years earlier or later than scheduled.

3. How to distinguish baby teeth and permanent teeth?

There are many factors that help distinguish baby teeth from permanent teeth :
The number of teeth is different:
A child will start teething around 4-6 months old and complete at 2 and a half years old. Total number of teeth has 20 baby teeth. In which:
4 middle incisors 4 lateral incisors 4 canines 8 molars From the age of 6 children begin to grow permanent teeth to replace the lost baby teeth.
Between the ages of 8 and 12, the baby’s growing jaw will mix baby teeth with adult teeth, so pay attention to the size of the teeth, all adult teeth are bigger than baby teeth
Up to about 12 By age the baby teeth will have been replaced, the child has 28 – 32 permanent teeth
4 middle incisors 4 lateral incisors 4 canines 8 premolars 8-12 molars Most humans will continue teething wise at 18-25 years old, or later. However, some people do not have wisdom teeth.

Enamel and dentin of milk teeth are thinner:
Due to the thinner, transparent enamel and dentin structure, there are no sensory nerves, the pulp chamber is larger, so caries will progress to the pulp faster than teeth forever . In baby teeth, the enamel layer is very thin, about 1mm, much lower than that of permanent teeth (2mm-3mm).
Dentin cells have poor hardness, not equal to enamel. Children have a higher rate of tooth decay than adults because the enamel layer is thin and the dentin is easily destroyed by acids. If children have tooth decay, they need to be treated early.
Permanent teeth are darker yellow than baby teeth:
Baby teeth are usually milky white because of less inorganic components, while permanent teeth are clearer and more yellow.
Permanent teeth often have buds: As for the permanent incisors, when new, there will be small knobs on the biting edge, these incisors will gradually disappear during chewing.
About the shape of baby teeth different from permanent teeth:
The crown of the baby teeth is lower than that of the permanent teeth because the milk teeth have a horizontal ratio and the baby teeth have a larger height.
The incisors and baby canines are small and not as sharp as the adult teeth.
Wider roots of baby teeth:

In proportion to the crown, the roots of baby teeth are longer and thinner. The primary molars have many roots (usually 3 for the upper jaw and 2 for the lower jaw) and the roots are often wide, so the extraction of baby teeth is easy to break.
The roots of the primary molars are separated closer to the neck and the further to the apex, the further apart.

4.Relationship between baby teeth and permanent teeth

Usually the permanent teeth will grow in the place where the baby teeth fell out. The cause is due to the pressure of the permanent teeth below, when the roots of the baby teeth will gradually dissolve, loosen and fall away, making room for the permanent teeth.
However, if the permanent teeth are located too far from the baby teeth, the permanent teeth will grow in without the deciduous baby teeth. Or if the baby teeth do not fall out even after reaching the age of tooth replacement, the permanent teeth will grow misaligned and are inserted because they are occupied by the baby teeth.
Therefore baby teeth and permanent teeth have a close relationship with each other. The existence of baby teeth not only ensures chewing function and aesthetics, but also plays an important role in orienting children’s future permanent teeth.
